If you are looking for the perfect Summer Getaway then maybe you should start considering lake trip as part of your bucket list! Nowadays, it seems like everyone is flocking to the beach coast for their summer vacations, however, little do they know about the beauty of crystalline Alpine lakes. Our Alpine Hotel is located in an area where there is an abundance of glacier-formed lakes, also known as the ‘Lombardy Lakes’, and they tend to be popular destinations for their beauty! There is a reason why many celebrities like George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Richard Branson are buying their own villas beside the lakes of Lago di Como or Lago di Garda, so if you want to know why you should have a holiday retreat on a lake - Here are 5 reasons why!

Fresh Water

Freshwater is incredibly essential to our planet; it is vital for the survival of both people and wildlife. As freshwater is an important resource, it brings a lot of biodiversity and beauty to its surrounding areas - which explains why lakes are one of the most picturesque locations on Earth. The good thing with diving into a lake full of freshwater is that it is less likely to sting your eyes in comparison to saltwater. You could also try diving in lakes, though it is significantly less visible than the ocean, it is a unique experience. In lakes like Lake Como, you can find shipwrecks and find freshwater fishes swimming around in the deep. If you are used to being in saltwater, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that being in freshwater brings a whole new experience - new fish species, the climate and the landscapes. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about the salty water sticking to your clothes or your hair!

Don’t have to worry about Sharks

Not a ‘jaws’ fan? Then you don’t have to worry because sharks do not swim in lakes. Being in Italy, we know that sharks can be quite common in Mediterranean waters, with species like the blue shark and the great white shark still lurking in the deep. Though it is generally quite rare for shark attacks to occur, there are still a handful of people that do get injured every year. So, you can be relieved to know that there won’t be any sharks in a lake. However, you may find humongous fish species like the Zander or the Northern Pike which can grow to very large sizes. But not to worry, they are essentially harmless.

The variety of activities

Of course, the most popular activities you can do relating to bodies of water are water-sports! Just like the ocean, you can do many recreational sports within the water – for instance – water skiing, sailing, windsurfing, diving, kayaking and more! A unique, and relatively new sport you can’t do in oceans is canyoning, which refers to the descent of a river system or a gorge – which of course, is very commonly found around lakes. Furthermore, since its near mountain ranges, you can take a detour to the mountains to try even more Summer Activities in the Alps like fishing, mushroom picking and hiking!

Gorgeous Views and Mountains

Lakes are blessed with stunning views of mountain ranges and unique flora and fauna that flourish around them. If you are looking for a truly gorgeous ‘instagrammable’ location, then consider having a trip to see a lake. Being in the Lombardy region of Italy, we are lucky to be surrounded by one of the most beautiful glacier-formed lakes in the world. Just imagine the mirror-like reflections on the water as the brightly-coloured Alpine flowers bloom under the warm summer sun, while the Italian Alps act as a breathtaking snow-capped backdrop. How blissful does that sound? We cannot deny that beaches are also photogenic; however, lakes are a unique and distinctive landscape that often go unnoticed.

Smaller Crowds

During the summer, most people are flocking to the beach, wanting to dip their toes in the salty ocean water. Yes, beaches are great summer destinations but can often be saturated by a large number of locals and tourists that want to soak in the summer sun. If you want to avoid the large crowd and still have some sunbathing and swimming fun, you should give lake vacations a-go. Lakes still offer amazing views and a variety of excursions that are comparable to beaches.

We hope that these reasons have convinced you to try having a lake vacation! Visit Albergo Miramonti; we are sandwiched between three of the biggest lakes in Italy; Lake Como, Lake Garda and Lake Iseo, we offer stunning alpine views and can give you a fantastic Spa day at our Hotel Spa.
