Travelling Around Italy: Train vs. Car

The debate between taking the train or renting a car is common amongst travellers going into Europe. As an Award-Winning Hotel in the Italian Alps, we often encounter guests who have travelled by vehicle, and some by public transport. Each transportation method has its pros and cons, but inevitably, it depends on the circumstances of the country as well as the preferences of the individual. Generally, Italy has a robust transportation system, with excellent, well-developed ports, rails and roads. So, with whatever mode of transport you choose, we’re sure that it will be a mostly comfortable journey.

TRAINS

Eco-friendly and Convenient

If you decide to opt for the trains in Italy, that is not a wrong choice at all! High-speed trains are connected all-throughout the country, making it easy to jump from one city to another. They arrive frequently and are incredibly easy-to-take. And with many of these trains, you can expect comfortable seating and some gorgeous views (have a look at the Bernina Express!), and you might even get access to Wi-Fi. With many of these stations, you can arrive in the heart of the city, without worrying about parking and driving laws at all. And if you’re travelling with children, then trains give ample space for children to walk around in the carriage, as opposed to staying in the same seat for a couple of hours. The most well known trains in Italy are called the super speedy ‘Frecciarossa’ trains which can take you all the way from Milan to Naples!

Less Flexibility

Unfortunately, the drawback of taking the train is that it doesn’t give much flexibility. You are primarily restricted to the stops, and on top of that, there are certain times you can take the train. Furthermore, though sharing the carriage isn’t much of a problem for most people, however, you may still encounter individuals who may be loud or have children crying, which may disturb your journey. Or if you’re travelling through large cities such as Milan or Rome, you will encounter overcrowded trains where you might not even get a space to sit down.

CARS

Extremely Flexible and Reliable

Travelling with your own rented vehicle means that you can go wherever you want to go! There is no need to arrange further transportation in terms of train tickets. You can make your own necessary stops and attain a real feel for the Italian countryside, pay attention, you will likely come across Italian Vineyards. There is the fact that many of the destinations in Italy, especially in the countryside, it may be harder to access certain areas without a car, especially if you want to go hopping from town-to-town. For instance, if you want to get from Corteno Golgi to Adamello Mountains, it would be cheaper to drive a car than to take the train. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about timetables as you can leave whenever you want. Sometimes, with trains, they can have delays and therefore cause great inconvenience.

DRIVING CULTURE

A disadvantage you may likely encounter if you’re driving around Italy is locating parking. If you decide to tour the more populous cities, it may be tough to find a parking space. Moreover, the driver behaviour in Italy can be somewhat of a culture shock to some people. You will discover Italians who recklessly drive, particularly in the highways. On top of that, driving through cobbled streets can be particularly challenging. So, if you’re someone who gets anxious driving, then it may not be the right mode of transport for you.
