Travelling to Italy with a Dog

There’s no better feeling than travelling the world with man’s best friend! While most people solo travel or go with family or friends – some of you would love to bring your pet abroad. We can’t blame you! Bringing your pet to explore the world with you seems like a super exciting experience! Especially if you ever decide to bring it to the beautiful scenery of the Italian Alps. In Albergo Miramonti we have had many guests come in with their furry friends, and they are more than welcome! However, you should keep in mind that there are some minor rules you will have to follow, as well as some things you have to be aware of.

THE REQUIREMENTS

Before you and your furry friend can jet off to Italy, you need to consider the rules and requirements when it comes to bringing your pet to Italy. First things first, get your dog microchipped. Why is this important? It is a form of identification that may help you locate your dog just in case it gets lost. Secondly, you need to ensure that your dog has been vaccinated for rabies, this vaccination usually lasts for up to 3-years, so make sure that you do top it up. After your dog has received the vaccination, the veterinarian will issue a pet passport that will allow you to bring your beloved friend to different countries. For more detailed information of pet documents, do visit the official Ministero della Salute site.

EATING OUT

You will have no major travels in bringing your pooch to any Italian restaurants! Though there are a number of restaurants that may prohibit pets from entering, there are still a good handful of eateries that allow for your pet to walk into the restaurant. But if not, you can opt for outdoor eating, as some restaurants may allow you to eat with your pet outdoors rather than indoors. Another alternative would be visiting the marketplace! Don’t underestimate the quality of food in Italian markets, as they offer an extremely delicious variety of products – maybe slices of Italian Salumi? A whole dish Porcini Tagliatelle? Roam to find out.

ACTIVITIES

There are many sights and activities you can go see with your dog! Though some landmarks may prohibit pets from entering, for instance, the Colosseum. Despite this, there are still a wide plethora of locations where you can take your dog. Whether that’s the ruins of Pompeii, the rolling hills of Tuscany, the cobbled streets of Venice – and of course – the evergreen forests of the Italian Alps. Don’t be too worried, as there are so many places you can take your pooch – don’t let that stop you from making unforgettable memories.

ACCOMMODATION

In comparison to many other European countries, Italy is one of the most dog-friendly nations in the world! A huge number of hotels allow pets to stay in the hotel (with an additional fee, of course), including our Alpine hotel Albergo Miramonti. You can expect friendly and highly-welcoming service from hotels from all over the country. But if you would like to be extra sure about the criteria, do your thorough research on hotels and don’t be afraid to contact them.

TAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORT

On the most part, dogs are welcome to take public transport with you to Italy. Though there are various rules, more often than not, they aren’t all enforced. The general rules include: getting your dog to wear a muzzle and leash and keeping them in carriage bags. Riding on public transport with a pet is particularly easier if you’ve got a smaller pet. Public transport in Italy is fairly easy to get on, in most cases, you don’t even have to book in advance (Unless of course, you’re taking high-speed services)!

Why not stay at our Alpine Hotel? We are located within the Alps, with a Hotel Spa, relaxing Cigar Lounge and an Italian Restaurant that serves local Valtellina Cuisine.
