SAN MArtino CHURCH
Just a 5 minutes walk from Albergo Miramonti stands the oldest church in the whole of Val Camonica - one of the largest valleys of the central Italian Alps. Built over the grounds of a Pagan Temple of the Sun, the San Martino Church gives you the chance to dive into the culture of Corteno Golgi. The historical value of this place is astronomical, as it’s previously served as a pagan temple, a Carolingian castle, a Roman church and finally even a refuge for partisans during the second world war. It’s a rare sight to be seen, still maintaining its Romanesque aesthetics. Its interior presents a rustic display - with a single nave, supported by wooden fixtures and flooring made of stone slabs. You’ll even find some symbolic frescoes gracing the walls of the church, ones of which have been preserved for many centuries!
“a hidden gem”
To make all this even more beautiful you can catch a breath-taking view of Mount Adamello while you’re up there. It truly is a hidden gem. The church is generally closed, opening only for special occasions - although we can organise a guided tour of the church for you. Just ask at reception or if you want to plan ahead, give us a call to book your trip.
