Why You Should Visit the Adamello Mountains
Just east of Albergo Miramonti, you can find the Adamello group of mountains located between the provinces of Brescia and Trentino. It is one of the most beautiful destinations you can visit while staying in the Italian Alps with its wide mountain range and picturesque landscapes.
ITALY’S LARGEST GLACIER
The Adamello mountain range has more than 140 glaciers formed! The most notable glacier is the ‘Pian di Neve’, which spans over 18 square kilometres across the mountains. These glaciers melt during the summer, which helps to regulate the rivers that run through Northern Italy. Furthermore, they make great locations for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. They also contribute to the dynamicness of the landscape.
HISTORY
Did you know, during the First World War, there was a battle that took place in the Adamello glaciers? It is known as the ‘White War’ between the Italians and the Austrians. The fight endured from 1915 until 1918, with clear evidence scattered everywhere in the mountains such as - trenches, camps, forts and even military villages. At some point in the 20th century, Pope John Paul II travelled to the Adamello to have a pilgrimage, and pray for the troops that suffered their unfortunate fate during the Great War. The Adamello Mountains are full of history, and it would be an incredibly educational and exciting visit if you decide to travel to this area.
RARE FLORA AND
FAUNA
Here, you will find the beautiful range of flora and fauna, making one of the most picturesque places to hike in the Alps. In the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, you can explore the Alpine Forests, gaze at all the crystal lakes, stand beside the glaciers and spot the animals that live in the Alps. Some of the rare fauna you may be able to find are brown bears, Alpine ibexes and marmots.
SKI ACTIVITIES
In Ponte di Legno, you can have fun with the range of activities you can do. When the snow returns to the mountains in the Winter season, you can go skiing on its glaciers, ideal for varying skill levels. Though that is the most popular sport, you can also try your hand at mountaineering in the Alps, going on a snowmobile or even snow kites. For a real winter getaway, you should consider giving the Adamello mountains a visit.
